Clean Up Barrie formed in 2020 as a sub-group of Barrie Families Unite, and in 2023 became its own incorporated non-profit organization.
Jen Slykhuis, Clean Up Barrie's Executive Director, has dedicated more than half her life to environmental causes including cleaning up litter in her spare time. In 2022 she received the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority's Healthy Community Award for her work making Barrie cleaner and safer for everyone. Since 2020, the members of Clean Up Barrie, have volunteered to attempt to keep the city clean all year round. In 3 years, the group cleaned up over 1000 bags of litter in over 75 locations. In 2023, the group has grown to over 1000 members online. Operating as a social enterprise, the goal of Clean Up Barrie is to beautify Barrie by assisting private landowners with litter removal and using generated funds to run volunteer clean up events on public lands. Please see our Private Landowner and Host A Clean Up tabs for more information on these initiatives. |
